Aren/t we ever to be?

Whatever happened
to autonomy?

Dog-tired wage slavery
life sentence
perpetual penance
escape inward
to the inner city
the crush
of the crushed
under the weight
of the pressure
American dream.

Was it ever not
fantasy?

Is there another
reality?

Without Poverty
here no one
feeds
the hungry
fucking
multitudes
struggling
make-believe free
must be real
we got belief
we watched it all
burn On T.V.
celebrity
tax write-off charity
distributing
autographed pity
sanctimoniously
not money
want the power
of their currency
to manifest
our own philosophy
on life
about the way WE
think things should be
& it works
over the nerves
anxiety building
hate starting
thinking:

Why am I doing this?

Ain/t I a free man?

Can/t I just opt-out?

But you can/t,
dollars and sense

& you ask yourself
if there was ever a time
when you were a part
of something else
something bigger
than yourself
something more
than the gathering
of material wealth.
